Pokémon Card Set Symbols: What Set Is My Card From?

Updated October 20, 2026 · By the PokeScan team

Every Pokémon card shows which set it belongs to with a small set symbol. On cards from the last decade it sits at the bottom left, next to the collector number; on the oldest cards (1999–2002) it’s at the right edge just below the artwork. Base Set, the very first English set, has no symbol at all. Match the symbol, then use the collector number to find the exact card.

Where to find the set symbol

  • Modern cards (Sword & Shield onward): bottom left corner, next to the collector number and a small letter in a box (the regulation mark).
  • Older cards: to the right, just below the artwork box.
  • Base Set (1999): no symbol. A card with no symbol in that spot and a Wizards of the Coast copyright is Base Set.

Reading the collector number

The collector number, like 125/094, has two parts:

  • The first number is the card’s position in the set.
  • The second number is the size of the main set.

If the first number is higher than the second, you’re holding a secret rare, printed beyond the main list. In Phantasmal Flames, 125/094 is the Mega Charizard X ex Special Illustration Rare, one of the most valuable cards of 2025.

Regulation marks on newer cards

Since 2020, cards carry a letter in a small box near the bottom (D, E, F, G, H, I…). It marks which era the card belongs to for tournament rotation. It narrows down the time period but not the exact set, so use it together with the symbol.

When symbols look alike

Many set symbols are small, similar shapes. If you can’t tell two apart:

  1. Check the collector number’s second half. Sets have different sizes, so /094 and /132 point to different sets.
  2. Look at the card frame. Each era has its own border and font style.
  3. Scan it. A scanner app reads the card and tells you the set and number directly. PokeScan identifies any of 21,987 English cards across 164 sets, from Base Set to 30th Celebration.

Frequently asked questions

My card has no set symbol. What set is it?

If it’s an old card with a Wizards of the Coast copyright, it’s almost certainly Base Set. Promo cards have their own markings (a “Promo” stamp or a black star symbol).

What does the number in the bottom corner mean?

It’s the collector number: the card’s position in the set over the set’s size. Secret rares have a first number higher than the second.
