How to Tell If a Pokémon Card Is Rare (Rarity Symbols Explained)

Updated October 20, 2026 · By the PokeScan team

You can tell how rare a Pokémon card is from the small symbol next to its collector number, at the bottom of the card. A circle means common, a diamond means uncommon and a star means rare. On recent cards, two or three stars, and stars in gold, mark the ultra rares. A collector number higher than the set size (like 152/128) means a secret rare, which is usually where the value is.

Rarity symbols on modern cards

Since the Scarlet & Violet sets (2023) and into the Mega Evolution era, rarity symbols work like this:

SymbolRarityWhat it usually looks like
●CommonBasic card, no foil
◆UncommonBasic card, no foil
★ (black)RareHolo card
★★ (black)Double Rareex card with a regular frame
★★ (silver)Ultra RareFull-art ex or Supporter
★ (gold)Illustration RareFull-art illustration of a regular Pokémon
★★ (gold)Special Illustration RareFull-art illustration of an ex or Supporter
★★★ (gold)Hyper RareGold-bordered card

Recent sets add their own top tiers: the Mega Evolution sets have a Mega Hyper Rare, and 30th Celebration has a Pikachu Rare run of 30 Pikachu cards and two Futuristic Rares.

Rarity symbols on older cards

Cards from 1999 to the early 2020s use the same circle, diamond and star, without the gold and multi-star tiers. Rare cards with a holographic artwork window are holo rares. Later eras added EX, GX, V and VMAX cards and full-art versions, with secret rares numbered past the set size.

Signs a card might be valuable

  • A secret rare number: first number higher than the second.
  • Gold stars or gold borders.
  • Full art and texture: art covering the whole card, with a ridged surface you can feel.
  • A “1st Edition” stamp on a 1999–2002 card. See first edition cards.
  • Popular Pokémon: Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon, Gengar, Mew and the Eeveelutions consistently sell above others of the same rarity.
  • A graded slab, especially a PSA 10.

Rare doesn’t always mean valuable

Rarity tells you how often a card was printed, not what people will pay. Look at 30th Celebration (TCGplayer, October 20, 2026):

CardRarityMarket price
Mew ex 152/128Special Illustration Rare$92.32
Salamence ex 156/128Special Illustration Rare$15.29
Pikachu 040/128Pikachu Rare$2.30
Pikachu 030/128Pikachu Rare$0.63

Two cards of the same rarity can be worth six times apart. The Pokémon, the artwork and demand matter as much as the symbol. The full 30th Celebration list has every card’s price.

How to check what your rare is worth

Find the exact card (set and number), then check its market price on TCGplayer or Cardmarket, or scan it: PokeScan shows the rarity, the price per finish and recent PSA sales together.

Frequently asked questions

What does a star on a Pokémon card mean?

A star means rare. Two or three stars, or gold stars, mean one of the higher ultra rare tiers on modern cards.

What is the rarest Pokémon card symbol?

On current cards, three gold stars (Hyper Rare) and set-specific tiers like Mega Hyper Rare sit at the top.

Are holo cards rare?

Holo rares are rare by definition, but since Scarlet & Violet every regular Rare is holo, so a holo alone doesn’t make a modern card special.
